So the other day at work I had an idea for a painting… unfortunately I had to make notes on a scrap of receipt paper and push that aside until today. I’ve been having a lot of ideas for paintings lately. And I am grateful that my mind is full of them. Because for awhile I thought painting was going the same direction as my fledgling singing career- ending abruptly never to be attempted again.
Though to be fair, if I ever learned to work with the limitations of my vocal ability that’s left, I probably still could sing. Especially if I learn to sing from my own voice, and not try matching other singers. I can guarantee my voice is unique LOL
But then there’s still the problem of having no music to go with what I would write. I have no talent for music production. My daughter is skilled at 8- bit and revamping video game songs rather than creating tracks from scratch. And I don’t have the money to pay someone else to compose music for me.
Painting ideas aren’t the only creativity filling me up… I’ve had so many more ideas for lines in poems. I like to start by typing one line and then letting everything that comes after it just pour out of me. Then I go back and edit, move some lines to other documents because they might fit a different poem, and then make what’s left on the page flow.
I’ve never liked the restrictions of making outlines. I prefer the chaos of scribbled notes on scrap paper, compiled into one “ideas” document, then randomly picking the one that stands out at that given moment. Maybe that’s why I’ve never been good at writing song lyrics. They tend to be more structured than my poetry, blogs and short stories.
Maybe that’s also why I struggle so hard with being in front of a camera and making vlogs. I write a script because words give me something solid to rely on. Because I have never been comfortable being the center of attention, all eyes on me and trying to talk coherently. I failed Speech and Debate class twice in high school. Except the teacher decided to give me an extra credit assignment the second time, and gave me a high enough grade to pass the class.
Awhile ago, Bestie suggested that I just turn on the camera and talk. Forget the script. Forget translating anything. Just talk. Let my personality shine instead of reading words on a page.
As recent as a couple years ago, the idea of being that open and vulnerable frightened me to my core. However, lately, there’s a little voice in my head that keeps urging me to just try it. If I really hate how the video turns out, I don’t have to upload it. And no one will ever know it existed.
But, dear readers, as much as I write here, it’s only a fraction of what races through my mind. Would that make videos too long? And what would I even talk about? I’m known to talk about any and every thing, jumping from topic to topic easily. I understand that can be annoying to some. But it’s just how my brain works.
There are so many reasons I can give to argue against making videos. I don’t like how the camera makes me look so heavy, (I’m shocked every time I catch a glimpse of myself in pictures or in a window). My voice gets tired easily. Nobody will watch them except maybe a couple friends or family. I don’t have a stand to set my phone in so that it films in the wide view rather than the narrow view (I don’t even know the correct terminology). I suck at trying to learn video editing techniques. The list goes on and on.
And there’s another whole list of things I argue to myself about against creating and uploading videos of me reciting my poetry. The main problem being- what if people steal my creative work? Because, let’s face it, that happens a lot. It’s happened to me before, in written form, by someone who was (what I thought) a friend. And now with all the AI drama, it’s more of a reality.
And yet… I have this overwhelming urge to share my voice with the world. Whether it’s written, spoken or in a painting. Whether anyone watches, listens, views or reads. An unshakable desire that wells up within me. I’ve already thought of the hundreds of reasons why I shouldn’t do it.
Yet that little voice inside keeps asking me, but what’s the BEST that could happen? And I back away from even thinking about answering. Because hope is fragile. I may have the ability to get hurt repeatedly and then keep hoping anyway, but when will I reach a point where I can no longer do so?
I don’t know if that point exists for me. I haven’t reached it yet, after everything I’ve been through. Though at times it took awhile for hope to return. But everyone has limits. How long until I reach mine?
Anyway, I need to stop musing in written form and get some sleep. I know I will be up before the sun rises as I rarely sleep past 5 am anymore. Thanks to the work schedule. At least tomorrow I have the exciting task of working more on the two canvases I started today after work.
Take care of yourselves,
