Grief does not have a linear timeline

I was going to write a blog about my first impressions of the new NUL album- Artifact. (which is amazing by the way!)

But instead, I need to talk about something that makes many people uncomfortable. Because it’s not light and happiness. It’s truth in the cold light of dawn when we would rather leave it in the darkest corner of the room and never make eye contact.

No one makes it out of this life without grief touching them in some profound way. It is part of the human condition and a most unfortunate truth. There is no timeline, no owner’s manual, no how-to instructions that apply to everyone in every situation. And it’s not a competition. There are no prizes for suffering more and longer than anyone else or for losing more connections.

It is a deeply personal experience that everyone can empathize with but never truly understand from another’s point of view. Grief doesn’t just apply to losing someone you love, though that seems to be the most readily accepted form. It’s the kind of grief that most people have experienced.

Some people turn to drugs or alcohol, some close themselves off from ever being close to another person again, some choose temporary, physical gratification and some people don’t survive it at all.

Some turn to religion or spirituality, others get counciling, and still others turn to creativity like painting, writing, music etc.

Grief is love that has no place left to go. Grief is anger at being abandoned in the most permanent way that can never be fixed. Grief pushes us to the absolute limits of the human capacity for pain.

And no one has the right to dictate how you deal with your grief. Or how long it takes. Personally, I don’t think we ever truly stop grieving. We just learn to live with it and eventually it becomes softer rather than sharp claws tearing us open constantly.

It’s okay if you thought you were doing well and then grief rears its ugly head, making the loss seem like a torrent of fresh agony. It’s okay to lose the light and sit in the dark for awhile. But please… don’t let that darkness swallow you whole. Don’t become bitter and jaded. Don’t close yourself off from the world forever.

As much as grief just fucking sucks… there is so much else that is good in this world. I know it’s hard to see sometimes. And if you ever need a shoulder to cry on (physically or online) I am here. If you can’t find the light, I will sit with you in the dark until you are ready to keep trying. We need to remind each other of the beauty in this sometimes ugly, harsh world.

Because as much as grief is a deeply personal experience, we all can empathize with another’s pain. We need connection, compassion and love in this world. Humans are not meant to be solitary.

Vulnerability has never come easy to me. Asking for help or support hasn’t either. But I am learning that I don’t have to carry it all alone. I don’t always have to be the strong one. I don’t have all the answers and that’s okay. Emotions are not to be feared, hidden away and ignored, even the hard ones.

Being human is messy and painful, but it also has truly beautiful moments. If someone ever helped you survive the truly awful moments, let them know. Because it matters. It may be what helps them find the light again in their own darkness.

With gratitude and love,
