I grew up in the shadow of my older brother who could draw, paint and write well. He also taught himself to play guitar by ear. He could do anything he put his mind to, the firstborn child, our father’s favorite. I adored my older brother but I didn’t understand him. And for most of my life I envied him and his male superiority and privledge.
As the daughter, I was not given the same encouragement in artistic and musical endeavors as Jason was. So I turned inward, to the silent world of reading and writing.
But in my heart I wanted to be an artist and musician. I wanted to play drums or bass and was not allowed. Even in school, my art teachers had no encouragement or advice. I was hopeless when it came to drawing realistically and shading. Painting was even worse. So I gave up.
I spent many years writing mediocre fiction and poetry, and some really bad song lyrics. It wasn’t until I was in my mid 20s that writing became easier. In 2007 my former best friend and I began “the fanfic from hell.” It started as her story about the characters in the anime “InuYasha”. When I read it, I got an idea for a storyline to run ajacent to hers. And from there we added so many characters and plot twists. It took on a life of its own, with me as the main writer after the first month. Stacie’s writing consisted of rewriting my work but from her characters viewpoints.
The sheer volume of content is almost unbelievable. There are many side documents (hundreds) and the four main documents (over 500 pages each). Literally thousands of pages typed out, years of work. It could be heavily edited and turned into a fiction series for publication because it has potential. However, the amount of work needed is monumental, and I don’t know if I want to do that. It’s some of the best writing I’ve ever done. But it’s a part of the past that I am trying to leave behind.
I digress. By the time 2017 rolled around, I barely wrote anything. Where I lived I didn’t have the time to sit and write for hours on end without interruption. There was always cleaning, cooking and caretaking to do. I crocheted some, but it didn’t really fill the creative void in my life.
I was scrolling Youtube one day, looking for a crochet tutorial video and happened upon a video for pour painting. Down the rabbit hole I went. And after a few days of watching, I began researching. I bought some cheap supplies and decided to try it myself.
October 5, 2017 is the day I did my first two paintings. They aren’t great but I’ve kept them. All that winter and into the next year I practiced when I could carve out a few minutes for myself. There were a lot of not great paintings created but I refused to give up. These beginning projects are a reminder of how far I’ve come in my creative journey.

Sometimes paintings crack as they dry. I learned not to use elmer’s glue to seal paintings because it yellows and ruins the canvas. Some colors when mixed end up looking like mud. Yet all these mistakes have made me a better artist. I’ve learned patience, perseverance and that creativity is a part of who I am. Whether its writing, painting or crocheting, I am a creative soul. And if that part is suppressed then I’m not living my best life.
My artistic style isn’t for everyone. Bright, happy colors don’t speak to me. I create in shadows with dark, bold colors. I don’t shy away from the darker aspects of mind and heart. I thrive there. I give vision and voice to the parts most people hide away in shame. My writing is the same.
I create intuitively. Even when I try to plan a painting or writing session, inevitably I veer off into intuition. And I’ve never been disappointed by releasing control in those moments.
“Karasu” is the first painting I was proud of. But I’ve never really talked about the second painting created two weeks later. It’s my first attempt at duality on canvas.

It seemed too intimate, too revealing. By not sharing it with everyone, I wasn’t vulnerable to being hurt or ridiculed. Not only was this painting created fully with intuition, paint moved with my breath, but it reveals what I kept locked behind formidable walls.

“Two Souls” is the title I had given it, but in reality it’s one soul fractured. Two bodies harboring the same gentle, creative soul, living across the world from each other and only coming together in the realm of dreams.
I don’t know what my future holds. I’m no longer a scared child who was never good enough. I’m no longer the broken woman who only wanted to be loved so she changed to fit the mold of someone else’s desires.
All I know is that I’m done hiding. I’m done giving time and energy to people who only want to see me fail or hurt me. The last half of my life is my own to do with what I want and need. Others are welcome on this journey, for I was never meant to be solitary. But not if your intentions are to use or hurt me. Nothing but love and truth from now until my last breath.
