My 6th Anniversary

I haven’t painted anything since “Soul Cage” in October 2024. I had a slow recovery from my second round of Covid. And in February this year I was sicker than I’ve ever been. I thought it was just bronchitis that wouldn’t go away or Influenza A. It turned out to be a bad case of pneumonia (deep in my lungs), exacerbated by my chronic anemia. I spent 9 hours in the ER, had xray, cat scan, blood transfusion, oxygen and IV antibiotics.

I was transferred to another hospital and spent four days there, on oxygen. It took five different antibiotics and a high dose steroid to start the healing process. I had two weeks off work, but it wasn’t enough. Recovery has been slow. I still get tired a lot and can’t work as hard as I used to. But I am alive.

This is an art blog, however, so let me tell you about the first time I felt “seen” as an artist.

In October 2017 I became interested in “pour” painting. Most of the work produced in the first year and a half was not good. But I learned techniques and how to mix colors. I also learned quickly which colors produce “mud” when they mix on the canvas.

The first painting I was really proud of was one I did in April 2019. I showed it to the “family” I lived with. I didn’t expect much of a reaction as they thought I was wasting my time and money on a silly hobby. Art was an escape from life in Texas. I didn’t know then how important art as a method of creative expression would become to me. But their lack of interest in me and their lack of understanding of what was important to me hurt me deeply.

I will admit, the color scheme for this painting was inspired by one of my favorite people in the world.  I’ve mentioned before- I primarily work with black. White and other colors are added for contrast. Not everyone likes that style, and that’s okay.

I don’t know why I did it. I followed my intuition and uploaded the process and final result photos, and I tagged Hizumi in the post. He responded. I was shocked, but happy. His response was more enthusiasm than I had ever had from my boyfriend and his family.

Today, I decided in honor of my 6th anniversary as a real artist, I was going to revisit the color scheme of “Karasu”. That painting was the first time I considered myself capable of producing good art. It wasn’t named “Karasu” right away, but I had noticed a black section at the bottom that reminded me of a crow in flight. I wanted to be that crow, flying far away, free. I hid so much of myself for years. In some ways, I still do.

So here is the process and final result of the color scheme revisited. It’s so very different than “Karasu” and that’s one of the things I love about abstract pour painting. You can use the same colors, the same techniques and get vastly different results.

So much has changed since that first painting. And yet, so much has not. I haven’t changed who I am and what’s important to me. But I have stopped letting people in that don’t deserve to have that kind of access to the real me. I’m protecting my peace. I’m creating because I want to, not because I need it for an income or an escape.

And so what if I’m inspired by someone more important to me than I am to them? Hizumi barely knows I exist, and that’s okay.

We don’t always get what or who we want in real life. However, I can visit my fantasy world, create art and find emotional release in the music his band produces. And it’s enough. It has to be.

Because all we need is someone to see us, even if only for a moment.
