Today I began the most daunting, ambitious painting I have ever attempted.

今日、私はこれまで挑戦した中で最も困難で野心的な絵を描き始めた。

I was inspired by a NUL song for this one.  I can’t yet disclose anything more than that. It might ruin the surprise. Or place too great of expectations on the finished project.

この絵はNULの曲にインスパイアされた。これ以上はまだ明かせない。

驚きを台無しにしてしまうかもしれない。

あるいは、完成したプロジェクトに大きな期待をかけすぎてしまうかもしれない。

What makes it daunting and ambitious?

何がそれを困難で野心的なものにしているのか？

It’s the largest canvas I’ve ever done. 20 inches horizontal by 16 inches vertical.

(50.8 cm horizontal by 40.64 cm vertical)

今までで一番大きなキャンバスだ。横20インチ×縦16インチ。

(横50.8cm×縦40.64cm）。

I’m attempting realism, along with my usual abstract style. I’ve never been good at making things look real, but I will do my best.

いつもの抽象的なスタイルに加え、リアリズムにも挑戦している。

リアルに見せるのは苦手だけど、頑張るよ。

It’s not just a quick dip, dutch pour or flip cup. This painting may take me weeks, as I have limited time to devote to art, outside of work and sleep.

さっとディップしたり、ダッチで注いだり、フリップカップを使ったりするだけではない。

仕事と睡眠以外でアートに割ける時間は限られているので、この絵には何週間もかかるかもしれない。

The first step of this project is to make the white canvas black. This is the most time consuming element, as each coat of black has to dry completely before the next can be applied.

このプロジェクトの最初のステップは、白いキャンバスを黒くすることだ。

これは最も時間のかかる作業で、

黒を塗るたびに完全に乾いてから次の黒を塗るからだ。

Each coat of paint is applied in opposite directions, for more even coverage. The black has to be nearly flawless before I add the other elements.

There will be a lot of negative space, to make the colors used really stand out.

塗料を塗る方向はそれぞれ反対にして、より均一になるようにしている。

他の要素を加える前に、黒はほぼ完璧でなければならない。

ネガティブ・スペースが多く、使われている色を際立たせる。

After seven coats of black paint, the canvas is finally prepped for the painting.

黒いペンキを7回塗った後、キャンバスはいよいよ絵のための下準備に入る。

This is the basic color palette I am using.

これが私が使う予定の基本的なカラーパレットだ。

To create the images from my mind onto the canvas, I have to step way out of my comfort zone. However, I will enjoy the journey of creation. I hope the finished product is as epic as what I envision.

頭の中のイメージをキャンバスに描き出すには、

自分のコンフォートゾーンから大きく踏み出さなければならない。

しかし、私は創造の旅を楽しむつもりだ。

完成した作品が、私が思い描くような壮大なものになることを願っている。

I anticipate this project will take at least a couple of weeks. I have limited time to be creative, between work and sleep. Pictures will be taken along the way, so that each step of the process can be shared. Wish me luck, I’m going to need it!
